Request for Information: Construction & Demolition Material Recovery

INTRODUCTION

MARC is reimagining the potential of waste in the Kansas City region (KC). Through the development of a material recovery plan, it is laying the foundation for the region to become more resilient and self-reliant. This will result from efforts to retain low-cost, low-carbon, durable materials that have historically been landfilled. Recovering these resources can benefit the region by boosting business growth, accelerating job creation and workforce development, and expanding equitable access to goods. Paired with the region’s intermodal capabilities, this new approach can also help KC to become a Midwest hub for secondary materials.

MARC desires to learn who can contribute to this vision, specifically the recovery and repurposing of waste materials flowing from acts of construction and demolition (C&D) and deconstruction. Examples of these materials can be found in the section below. Building a self-perpetuating circular economy requires the development of a full ecosystem. With this in mind, MARC seeks to identify potential players who can contribute in a range of ways, up and down the value chain.

PURPOSE

This purpose of this RFI is to gather insights on the latest methodologies, technologies, products, and services that can help KC to recover and repurpose waste materials flowing from C&D and deconstruction activity in the local built environment (e.g., residential, commercial, public, etc.). We are interested in contributions from every aspect of the value chain including:

• Design for circularity and regeneration
• Supportive public policy and permitting
• Funding and financial incentives (e.g., identifying and securing relevant grants, appraising the value of recovered resources for donation, accountants who specialize in tax filings for deconstruction, etc.)
• Deconstruction (e.g., deconstruction services, training for workforce, techniques, safety, and profitability, etc.)
• Sortation and separation of recovered C&D materials onsite
• Transportation, storage and logistics for recovered materials
• Land development for circular industrial parks focused on recovered materials
• Processing recovered materials for brokers and end markets
• Brokering recovered materials, preferably for end markets in the KC region
• Reuse, repair, recycling, manufacturing, waste-to-energy solutions and more that keep the recovered materials circulating in the local region at their highest value.
• Support services (e.g., technology or expertise) that enable any or all of the above to integrate and flow more easily, intelligently, swiftly, and profitably

SCOPE OF INFORMATION REQUIRED

The insights gained from this RFI will help MARC to identify and convene relevant respondents at an upcoming C&D Material Recovery summit in the fall of 2026. In that setting and other ways, MARC can help to connect you with potential customers in KC who are in need these services.

• Non-Ferrous Metals: Aluminum siding, copper wiring, plumbing, brass fixtures, etc.

  • Millwork – Doors, cabinets, trim, paneling, flooring, fireplace mantels, etc.
  • Clean – Untreated lumber, pallets, etc.
  • Treated – Decks, fencing, outdoor features, etc.
    Cardboard and Paper: Packaging from new appliances and fixtures.
• Plastics and Polymers:
  
  • Piping: PVC, CPVC, PEX, etc.
  • HDPE/LDPE: Common in protective films, vapor barriers, buckets, etc.
  • Flooring: Carpet, vinyl, linoleum, etc.
  • Insulation: Fiberglass batts, polystyrene (EPS), rigid foam boards, etc.
• Glass: Windows, architectural glass, stained glass, mirrors, etc.
• Fixtures: Sinks, tubs, lighting, countertops, hardware, etc.
• Furniture: Cubicles, desks, tables, chairs, couches, beds, etc.
• Appliances: Refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, laundry washers, dryers, HVAC systems, water heaters, etc.
